Jesse Hughes scores medals in Virginia Senior Games

RICHMOND, Virginia—Jesse Hughes knows how to represent. Hughes, 82, brought home three medals from the recent Virginia Senior Games. The games, held May 10-13, in Richmond, are open to adults, aged 50 and above. Hughes won silver in basketball, gold in the 200-meter dash, and gold in the long jump.
“Mr. Hughes is an amazing example of wellness,” said Liz Gee, The Chesapeake’s Director of Marketing. “Many of us who are younger couldn’t begin to do what he does.”
This is the second time Hughes has participated in the games, which began as “The Golden Olympics” in 1979. Last year, Hughes won a gold medal in basketball and silver medals in the 50-yard dash, the 25-meter backstroke and the broad jump. Hughes says he keeps in shape by taking advantage of the many wellness programs offered at The Chesapeake.
The Virginia Senior Games, which provide a qualifying venue for the National Senior Games, include a variety of events, including swimming, track and field, table tennis, and archery. In 2016 more than 2,100 athletes from across Virginia participated in the games.
